Kishu Charcoal was born in 2011 as an alternative to plastic water filters. Made by artisans in Japan, using traditional methods and handmade kilns, Kishu Charcoal is brought to life from sustainably harvested oak branches slowly carbonized to 1000 degrees. After a number of days, a beautiful and glass-like activated charcoal emerges.

Charcoal is ready to use upon opening the package. Simply place in any pitcher or water bottle and add tap water. Kishu filters absorb toxins and impurities including lead, mercury, cadmium, copper and chlorine, while imparting healthy minerals calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Kishu Charcoal is…

…the only completely plastic-free water filter.
…made from the finest Japanese activated charcoal.
…individually hand cut — every stick is different.
…produces the most delicious tasting tap water.
…green and COOL!

100% Green

From its production (100% natural oak branches) to its packaging (recycled paper stock and compostable clear sleeve made from wood pulp), not to mention its many secondary uses, Kishu Charcoal an environmentally conscientious product.

Maintenance

Kishu Charcoal should be boiled once per month to keep its pores open. Simply place in a shallow pan of water and bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Allow to dry for 30 minutes before reusing. While a small amount of flaking may occur, the stick will stay completely intact; Kishu will NEVER deteriorate. After four months, Kishu should be replaced. Please use the handy boiling schedule, located inside the package label, to keep track of your Kishu stick’s life.

Second Life

Kishu Charcoal has great secondary uses: absorbing odors in the refrigerator (better than baking soda!) or crushed and mixed into your garden soil where it will help improve water absorption.
